Shucking an oyster safely is a technique easily learnt and easier with the right equipment.
The key equipment required is a shucking knife plus a glove to protect the hand holding the oyster while opening.
A purpose built timber block can also help control the oyster while opening.
The shucking knife is available for purchase from the shopping cart to be included in your box of oysters.
The timber block is still being developed and will be available soon.
With a little bit of practice and the right tool, it is easy to open an oyster.
Insert the shucking knife between the upper and lower shells at the rounded edge.
Wriggling the point of the knife as you do it will help penetrate the shells.
Using a twisting motion, pry the shells apart, enough to then slide the knife laterally from side to side up against the top flat shell. This severs the aductor muscle. Be gentle but firm so you don't damage the oyster or loose any of the liquid.
Slide your knife under the oyster and cut the other side of the aductor muscle. Then turn the oyster over inside its shell.
